During the years of Venetian rule in Crete (1210-1646), among the families of Venetian nobles who came to Crete and finally stayed and became part of the local society, were members of the important Moazzo or Muazzo family. Even today there are roads and bridges in Venice bearing this name.
On the site where the Casa Moazzo (which means: the house of Moazzo) stands today there were the mansion, the courtyards and the family stables, of which only the Venetian stone door frame survives at the entrance to the hotel, a genuine work of art!
The years passed, and at the turn of the century Dr Themistocles Moatsos, director of the hospital of Rethymnon and descendant of the prominent family, built the neo-classical house which we see today on the site of the old mansion, and lived here with his beloved wife Maria and their only son Demetrius. His magnificent house, with its furnishings and light fittings from Europe, was always spick and span and ready to welcome everybody.
Themistocles Moatsos was an aristocrat and a benefactor who devoted his life to his science and to the people of Rethymnon. As a doctor he was involved in public affairs. He was president of the Red Cross, served as member of Parliament, and studied history and astronomy. He treated his patients and asked for no payment. He constructed the fumigation unit in the street which bears his name and saved Rethymnon from the scourge of tuberculosis.
Demetrius Moatsos was a lawyer, practising first in Rethymnon and later in Athens.
He became the nomarch of Larisa, member of Parliament for Rethymnon, and later Minister of the Interior. He spent most of his time in Athens, but his visits to Rethymnon were great festive occasions! His lawyer's office was on the ground floor and communicated with the house via an inside staircase. All the intellectual and political personalities of the day passed through this house.
Eventually, he went to live permanently in Athens, and in 1979 the house was purchased by the Thomadakis family. A few years later new buildings were added, it was renovated, and served as a traditional guest-house for visitors from all over Europe. Younger members of the family recently undertook to realise the dream of their mother, Stella: to restore the building to its former splendour.
All the hotel's rooms were completely renovated and totally refurbished, while care was taken to respect both its history and the people who lived in it and loved it.The renovation of the hotel was an inspiration of the Architect Kostas Iliakis.
Casa Moazzo suites and apartments opened in summer 2009 and await you!
